## Research Collaborations

The Center integrates two independent research communities, the researchers
of mathematics and engineering, through intensive cooperation. Conventionally,
the mathematical programming tools have been developed independently of the
engineering problems without taking into account the specific features of the
problems. Since the current research issues of the Center are highly complex
(e.g., optimization problems with large number of integer variables), this approach
is not able to solve the problems. Since the Center has good interface with both
communities, i.e., mathematicians and engineers, it can incorporate the best
knowledge of both. This is the basis of the development of mathematical programming
methods exploiting the specific features of the problems to be solved. This
illustrates the interdisciplinarity of the Center.
